You Haven't Lived Until You've Chased Cheese at the Cooper's Hill Cheese RollBy: Grant Marek
What does our weekend need more of?
When does it need it?
OR, LIKE, IN A WEEK WHEN THEY HOLD THE COOPER'S HILL CHEESE ROLL IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE, ENGLAND ON MAY 29TH, REALLY WHICHEVER COMES FIRST IS FINE.
No one really knows when or why the Cooper's Hill Cheese Roll was started (one group says it links back to the pagan practice of rolling things down a hill for the start of a new year, the other group says it was first started when some dude was all "lol, this would be so funny, let's do it and tell everyone we're doing it in honor of the pagan practice of rolling things down a hill for the start of a new year") -- whyever it was started, it's pretty freaking hilarious.
Painful-looking and hilarious.
The event itself is actually pretty simple -- they roll a 9lb wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down Cooper's Hill; the first person down the hill wins the wheel of cheese. They do three rounds of this, and for every one you win you add a "cheese" to your name.
The all time record holder is Stephen Gyde, who has a total of 20 cheeses over a period of 14 years and really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really likes cheese. The 2016 winner, Chris Anderson, though, appears to be hot on his trail with 17 in 12 years. Anderson also, reportedly, really, really, really, really, really, really, really likes cheese -- one fewer "really" than Gyde.
